Setting: The setting is Dunbar High School in Washington D.C. in March 30, 1981. the students have received a day of weekend detention and must stay in the science lab for the entire day to serve their punishment.
Historical Facts: During the 1980s very little happened in terms of historical events so we have chosen the attempted assaination of Ronald Regan that happened during the early eighties. The students are in detention when they find out about this and have unique ways of handling it. Common jobs during that time period for teens including working at Pizza shacks, ice cream stores, having a paper route and many other common jobs. The money made was use to purchase cigarettes costing an average of 0.66 cents a pack, fuleing their cars at a mere $1.13 a gallon, and buying some crazy clothes. The popular styles included Ray Bans, high tops, Madonna fashions, sweaaters, polos and many other fashions that have actually become popular today. They are all high school girls, drressing in their own style and fashion unique to themselves as is still seen today. The economy is running smoothly so tough times are not very present.
Way of Life: As mentioned they are four high school girls growing up and concerned with the things that normall teenage girls stress over. The really popular girl of course has the parents who buy her a car, then of course there is the geek who rides a bike, the jock that comes riding in on some guys motorcycle and then the outcast just slowly walking in, not talking to anyone, rubiks cube clutched in hand. Throught their time in the science labrotory you will hear many common eighties phrases such as "no doubt", "pysch", "barf me out" and "gag me with a spoon." This is a time filled with music, individuality and Madonna.
Genre: This play/story has a mixed genre. It brings the seriousness of Ronald Reagans attempted assination with the comedic aspected tied in by the reaction that each girl takes in dealing with the news that this has occured. We want to reach a variety of audiences so the storyline follows many genres.
Point of View: Our story is told from the point of view of the outcast girl who keeps track of the entire detention day in her notebook.For once we get to see what that quiet girl in the corner thinks of the situation. This gives the play or story a unique perspective.
